What does cross-dressing have to do with Twelfth Night?
Shakespear wanted to make it a comedy, since in the 17th century cross-dressing and homosexuality was a bad thing and you have the chance to get tortured and killed for it. He also wanted to show conclusions about the effect of the same-sex attraction

Why was Cesario/Viola even there???
-The Sea Captain tells her about the Duke, and him being in love with Olivia, But
Olivia basically put up a wall (to love) to honor here brother who died. Viola has something in common with here (dead brother) and wants to serve her. Viola wouldn’t be able to do that as a women, so she has the Sea Captain dress her like a man (Cesario), so she can serve the Duke instead.

Is William Shakespeare gay?
Every once and while the question of weather william Shakespeare was gay has come up, and many people believe that he was. Even though he was married and had three kids, but the continuous use of cross dressing and other gender confusion makes people question if he is gay or not.

Why did Viola want to dress up like a guy for? ‘Cuz she was washed up at shore and was wanting to get a job at Duke Orsino’s court.

1.At which point in history did the English language change from the English that we now use in our everyday lives to the English of the Shakespearean Era?
The Answer:The English language has actually changed many times over the last 2000 years. The first two version of the English language were actually before the Shakespearean Era these versions were known as Old English and Middle English. Old English was spoken from 500-1100 AD. Then after 1100 AD the first change happened with influences from the Normans and the Latin language this language was known as Middle English spoken from 1100-1500. The Renaissance influenced the next change in the English language which was known as Early-Modern English. This type of English was the type which the people of the Shakespearean Era spoke; this was spoken from 1500-1800. The next change in the English language was basically just improvements in spelling, pronunciation, and grammar. This is what is now spoken and is known as Late-Modern English and has been spoken since 1800-present. The transformation from the Shakespearean language and our Modern language is just a matter of spelling, grammar, and pronunciation that happened circa 1800.

times, laws regarding marriage changed and women were no longer allowed to be bartered, sold or exchanged for goods of any kind. If a couple wanted to get married, a priestly blessing was required first. It was also illegal for secret wedding ceremonies to be held. A wedding was still arranged in many cases, and contracts were even drawn up listing the terms and rights of all parties involved. Weddings among royalty and aristocracy were often arranged when the bride and groom were only ten or twelve years old. These weddings were more about property and inheritance than love.

Q: Why did Shakespeare use Illyria as the setting in Twelfth Night?
A: Shakespeare uses Illyria because in Roman terms, Illyria is a region off the coast of the Adriatic Sea in what is today Albania. It was a distant land with which the English had very little contact. Therefore, to Shakespeare this was perfect because he could make the setting as his own. It was a perfect place for shipwrecks, romance, and intrigue.

Was Shakespeare gay?
Shakespeare was more attracted to the same-gender sex than most other people. He was married with kids buy he spend decades living in London away from his family. He did write some ‘love’ poetry to a young man but in those days that didn’t mean it was sexual. No one thinks he had a long-term relationship with a man and it’s impossible to categorically prove he never had sex with one.

The play of 'Twelfth Night', it seems to me, that the only form of pastime for people in the 17th century, were plays and/or reenactments. So after researching for a bit, I found that besides plays, the people of that time games such as tennis and shuttlecock were popular as well as card and board games like chess, draughts, backgammon and fox and goose. The more common folk played poorer games such as cock, bear and bull fighting.

There are many reasons why Shakespeare is though of the best of all writers. His plays portray recognisable people in situations that all of us experience at one time or another in our lives - love, marriage, death, guilt, the need to make difficult choices, separation, reunion and reconciliation among them. They do so with great humanity, tolerance, and wisdom. Because they are written to be acted they are constantly fresh and can be adapted to the place and time they are performed. Their language is wonderfully expressive and powerful, and although it may sometimes seem hard to understand in reading, actors can bring it to actual life for us. The plays provide actors with some of the most challenging and rewarding roles ever written. They help us to understand what it is to be human, and to cope with the problems of being so.

Why is the Twelfth Night by Shakespeare named that?
Shakespeare named the play the Twelfth Night because the play was performed on the Twelfth Night. The Twelfth Night is a reference to the Epiphany or the twelfth night of the Christmas celebration, which is on January 6. During Shakespeare’s era, the Twelfth Night was celebrated as a festival in which everything was inverted—much like it is in the unmethodical world of Illyria in the play.

Why is it called Twelfth Night?
"Twelfth Night is the night of Epiphany, January 6, or, the twelfth night after Christmas. This holiday signaled the end of Christmas merry-making and, more importantly, commemorated the Magi. It is likely that Shakespeare wrote the play to celebrate this occasion and thus gave it this specific title. There are critics who connect the holiday and thus the title to characters in the play, like Sebastian and Viola, who could represent Christ's dual nature. But these connections are dubious."
