On Monday, November 1, 2010 my students were given the task to research and complete some information over why William Shakespeare is important. I see some good work in what they are doing. Sadly, I keep telling them to use correct grammar in order to get full credit, but I am noticing even simple mistakes such as capitalization, end punctuation, fragments and run-ons. I know they have been taught these things previously - they are sophomores. A lot of research suggests texting is the problem. I really don't know. I would love to hear your thoughts. (If you are a student in my class this is the equivalent to a bonus point on your exam.)

Update: Unfortunately, I was trying to do this fast and without my own spelling/ grammar errors, yet one of my students found an error. :( I have since changed this error, but cudos to my student editor!

I think laziness and texting is part of the problem. Too much work also makes you not want to work as hard rather than just getting work not so often and working very hard on it.

Texting can be a problem but not everyone has texting.
I believe that we could write short stories that would 'test' our grammar mistakes, spelling errors, & others. That way if we did have any mistakes we could fix them and see why, and then we learn as well as have fun with making a short, fictional story.

I believe that texting is the main problem. To text quicker, most teens use abbreviations and shorthands, such as "ur" for your. They don't use punctuation as well. The amount of texting teenagers do eventually leads to them not understanding the difference between formal and informal language.

i have a phone and texting i agree it can be a problem for the person that spells waz ttyl, lol etc, but for the person that spells out should know not to do that so it could human issue. It also doesnt help that on the old computers in the school every time we ended a sentence, the next letter would be there. Texting is the problem, but at the same time were not really used to the macs we've only had the macs for a month now.

Texting is a huge problem in our spelling because we're just trying to shorten things. We're writing "tht" instead of that or "bcz" instead of because. We're so used to these abbreviations that we're forgetting the correct way to spell words. Plus some teens rush when they write and theirs a larger chance they'll have grammar mistakes.

I think that texting is part of the problem. When you text, people like to abbreviate. I notice myself, when I type an essay, backspacing because of abbreviating or not punctuating. Texting isn't the only reason. Another part of the problem is because we are not in elementary school, where we are taught it every day. I think that our brains begin to slip-up.

I think we're used to texting and shortening our words so much that we're forgetting the correct way to spell things.

I thinks texting has something to do with the problem but at the same time this year has been really busy and without the time to pay all the extra attention to our work due to multiple assignments. Sometimes little things suffer when we do not have a lot of time to check our work.
